This is Suzie. She is almost 2 years old.

She almost died in childbirth, but her mother had been sponsored by Amani to give birth in a hospital setting. Thanks to the care of Amani’s health workers she and her Mother have been closely monitored and cared for to ensure that she obtained the primary feeding and health care they needed to combat malnutrition. Suzie like other children in the region was also impacted by the potential risks of malaria and other infections. Both Suzie and her mother were vulnerable to the widespread resistance to anti-malaria medicines. Compounding this issue was the link to maternal malnutrition –which has been known to increase the risk of poor pregnancy outcomes and can cause low-weight babies.

Malaria Almost Claimed Her Life

This is where AGW played a pivotal role in providing the comprehensive care to help Suzie obtain the necessary treatment to stave off infection and fully develop.  Amani’s Health workers are vigilant in watching for signs of dehydration and anemia and other complications which can affect patients like Suzie. Interestingly enough, while Suzie’s mother and others in the region are at risk– for children the disease can be compounded by their young immune system and can very often result in stillbirth or low birthweight babies. We are pleased that Suzie’s been well cared for and through simple, medical interventions has gained the necessary weight to fight malnutrition, malaria and eventually thrive.
