About Us

Amani Global Works saves lives in the Great Lakes Region of Africa, using Idjwi Island as a model.

Care. Cure. Make Whole.

Founded in 2010 by Dr. Jacques Sebisaho and his wife, Mimy Mudekereza, their work for Amani has been concentrated on the Island of Idjwi, located on Lake Kivu, between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. AGW operates a replicable model of primary health care utilizing community health workers, regional health centers and a referral hospital to provide care in a dignified setting to all people, in even the most remote regions.

Our Story

Amani began operations in 2010 with a small medical center on Idjwi Island in Lake Kivu. Lake Kivu is located in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, an area that for more than 20 years had been devastated by war and related violence. However, during that period, Idjwi remained a peaceful sanctuary untouched by the conflicts surrounding it. Although Idjwi is a peaceful place, its population of 300,000 is very poor with minimal access to basic necessities, such as basic nutrition, power, plumbing, sanitation, transportation and healthcare.

In the past nine years this small two-room facility has grown into a fully equipped and operational regional referral hospital with two operating rooms and a neonatology unit. This hospital is the center of Amani’s low-cost integrated primary health system that combines hospital, affiliated clinics and community health workers. At all stages of development, including planning, building and operations, Amani has engaged the local community. Idjwi residents have volunteered thousands of hours on Amani projects, and Amani is the largest employer of local residents in the region.
