The hospital on Idjwi was completed in 2014. It employs five full-time doctors and 20 full-time nurses, as well as administrative and support staff. The hospital is fully equipped with modern medical equipment as well as a pharmacy. It has 50 beds and two operating rooms and a neonatology unit. The hospital treats more than 75,000 patients each year while providing the following services: (i) Internal Medicine; (ii) Surgery; (iii) Pediatrics; (iv) Obstetrics and Gynecology; and (v) Laboratory Services. All medical services are free to patients with a special focus on children under five years of age, pregnant women, and the native population, which constitutes 5% of the population and whose life expectancy is 25 years.
