The feature article describes the inception and missions of Amani Global Works. It also discusses the ways Amani Global Works has made a difference to the community of Idjwi Island. For example, the medical center has been treating approximately 240 patients daily and the nutrition center has been feeding 150 children twice a day. A total of two full-time physicians and eight nurses now serve the community on 10 acres of land that has been donated to the organization by the community. Dr. Jacques Sebisaho hopes to use “health care as an anchor for community economic development model in the region”.

We Care Solar & UN Foundation

Dr. Sebisaho spoke about the important connection between sustainable energy and health care at the “Powering Health Care in the Developing World” conference in Washington, D.C. The conference was sponsored by the United Nations Foundation and the World Health Organization. Since many of the patients in Idjwi come to seek health care only after their work day is done, the important and life-saving role that solar energy plays in the facilities at Amani Global Works is immeasurable. For example, when a Solar Suitcase was brought into the village during a cholera outbreak, survival rate from cholera spiked to 100%. The clinic’s current ability to monitor patients throughout the night continues to make a world of difference to those who live in Idjwi.
